What Are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is a personalized cap that fits snugly over a tooth. It’s typically placed on top of a tooth that has been damaged in order to protect it. In the past, dental crowns were made of metals like silver or gold. While these materials were durable, they made the restoration highly noticeable. Today, the vast majority of crowns utilize tooth-colored materials like porcelain. They are still strong enough to last for several years, but they blend right in with the rest of your smile.

Getting a dental crown usually takes two appointments. During the first of these visits, Dr. Brumbaugh will reshape the tooth and capture impressions of that area of your mouth. Those impressions are then sent to a dental lab, where a team of professionals craft the crown to perfectly resemble the original tooth. In the meantime, we’ll protect your tooth with a temporary crown. A few weeks later, you’ll return to our office and switch out the temporary for the permanent, lifelike crown.

Do I Need a Dental Crown?

We may recommend a dental crown in order to:

  • Prevent a severely decayed tooth from breaking even further
  • Hold a broken tooth together
  • Protect a badly worn-down tooth
  • Hold a dental bridge in place
  • Conceal an aesthetically flawed tooth
  • Protect a tooth that has recently undergone root canal therapy
  • Restore a single dental implant

If your tooth has sustained damage, don’t hesitate to visit your dentist in Dallas. We can assess your situation and determine whether a dental crown is the best way to restore your oral health.

CEREC Same-Day Crowns

While the traditional crown process takes two appointments over the course of several weeks, CEREC technology allows us to design, create, and place a crown all on the same day. Often, the appointment only takes about an hour.

After prepping and taking impressions of the tooth, we send the data to a computer that is attached to an in-office milling machine. The machine then fabricates your personalized crown from a solid block of ceramic. Once it’s complete, we can go ahead and place it atop your tooth. The CEREC process eliminates the need to schedule two separate appointments and wear a temporary.

Benefits of Dental Crowns

Dental crowns let you chew normally with a tooth once again. Because crowns also restore a tooth’s natural shape, the surrounding pearly whites won’t drift out of place. Plus, it protects the tooth from further damage that might require it to be extracted later on. Many patients also find it easier to smile confidently when their cracked, chipped, or otherwise damaged tooth is covered up. Lastly, you can expect your crown to last a decade or more with proper aftercare.
